Meteora, Greece

Meteora must rank, for me, as one of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve been to, and I’ve been to quite a few. Not only is the landscape of sandstone pillars breathtaking, but atop many of these pillars are perched ancient monasteries that are still thriving. Get there at sunset or sunrise and you have the makings of some great photos. Here we see the 16th century Monastery of St. Barbara, just after the sun went down. You can visit the monasteries. Some are easily accessible. Others require climbing hundreds of steps. All are beautifully decorated inside and offer exceptional views of an exceptional landscape.
